The NOUN

The Noun is a word (a notional part of speech) that denotes an object or a person.

Russian nouns have 3 characteristics:

  1. Number : plural, singular

  2. Gender:  masculine, feminine, neuter

  3. Case: Nominative, Genitive, Dative, Accusative, Instrumental, Prepositional

 

 

The Plural of Nouns

All the nouns can have the plural, except uncountable ones. Pair nouns can’t have the singular. (as well as in English).

In the plural masculine and feminine nouns take the ending -ы or -и, and neuter nouns the ending -а or -я.

Студент – студенты

Птица – птицы

Песня – песни

Окно – окна

Море – моря

Many words (especially of neuter gender) change their stress.

Gender of nouns

 

Gender of nouns is clearly expressed only in the singular.

The gender of a noun is generally shown by its ending. The gender of nouns denoting persons or animals is generally determined by their sex. Some nouns denoting members of a profession or trade can be of common gender and applied to persons of either sex:  Он учитель, она учитель; он врач, она врач.

The masculine endings: (no ending, consonant),- й – кот, музей

The feminine endings: -а, -я  -птица, семья

The Neuter endings: -о, -е   — зеркало, поле

Gender endings (their meaning) don’t apply to the names.

There are some borrowed foreign nouns with unusual gender

The Case Of Nouns

The nouns in Russian change their endings (and meaning in the sentence) according to the Case. There are 6 cases in Russian.

Именительный

Nominative

Родительный

Genitive

Дательный

Dative

Винительный

Accusative

Творительный

Instrumental

Предложный

Prepositive (Locative)

There are three Declension which denotes the necessary endings.
